Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, is a bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani and characterized by muscle spasms. Clostridium tetani produces the tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT), which is released as a single 150 kDa polypeptide chain.

Unlike most infectious diseases, naturally infected tetanus patients usually do not develop immunity after recovery. Tetanus can be prevented by tetanus toxoid vaccination. For children under seven years of age, tetanus vaccine is often administered as a combined vaccine, the DPT/DTaP vaccine, which also includes vaccines against diphtheria and pertussis. For adults and children over seven, the Td (tetanus and diphtheria) or Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine is commonly used.

Anti-TeNT MAbs are highly specific to C. tetani.

Most antibodies are validated for ELISA, WB, etc.

Tetanus Antigens

C. tetani related native antigens and recombinant antigens expressed by E. coli or P. fluorescens are used for the detection of antibodies specific to TeNT in assays including ELISA, WB and HA.
