LPS is in high demand in the cancer research field for its role in stimulating the immune system to attack tumors. Dendritic cells (DCs) are crucial in stimulating and maintaining antitumor immune responses. Maturation of DCs is induced in tissue culture by as little as 1 μg/mL of E. coli LPS. Tumor-specific antigens attached to molecules of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on the surface of DCs are processed, presented to and recognized by T cells. Mature DCs contribute to fully activating T cells, providing critical molecules, such as co-stimulatory signals and cytokines.
